LYRICS (TO FULL SONG): How much longer, Will it be? Say it only makes us stronger, But we’re beat. Oh it takes more courage than I can say Oh it takes more time than I’ve been awake Oh it takes more courage than I can say Oh it takes more time than I’ve been awake And I’m lucky I can take pride In what many others have to hide I’m lucky I can take pride In what many others have to hide Oh it takes more courage than I can say Oh it takes more time than I’ve been awake Oh it takes more courage than I can say Oh it takes more time than I’ve been awake I’ve tread lightly for too long The sirens sing their songs And leave them in my head Try to forget what I know It’s hardest when I go To lay myself to bed Oooooh... aaaaahh Oooooh... aaaaahh

about

Free Debris Will Call You to Dance and Dare You to Dream
An Unfolding Story of Undulating Oddities

The debut EP, Free Debris, by Annabelle Maginnis is a culmination of care between herself and several collaborators. Producers on the project include B~Smooth,Teddy Roxpin, Smile High Club, CAPYAC and Zhao (in order of appearance). Free Debris includes the singles, “Hear My Mind,” “Steady,” and “Little Toes.”
The Foreword, Respite and Epilogue titled “Courage,” were produced by B~Smooth. They’re a dissection of one song that reflects on the lineage of bravery that lent itself to the ease of Annabelle’s recent coming out to their family. Despite all of the work of queer icons in the past and it was still a huge hurdle for the artist. The track was originally one tune, but B~Smooth offered the idea of breaking it into three parts. With the story expressed throughout the EP, the evolution of self-affirmation becomes an audio motif and a story told in a non-linear cycle.
In the song, “Growing Pains,” with Teddy Roxpin and Ricky Bakken, Annabelle claims that you’ve “gotta go through good to get to great, sprouts ain’t scared, they don’t hesitate.” While nature may not put its growth on pause for existential reasons, humans do. Yet with such good friends as collaborators, the process of the project became a call for growth in and of itself.
One of the most vulnerable tracks is called “Up2U.” It was originally about the personal inhibitions of Annabelle looking up to her father. His opposition to her decision to make music struck her in a big way. Despite her musical progress, he insisted that she pursue another path through further academia. Due to their close and otherwise healthy relationship, his disapproval was a hard pill to swallow. Regardless of circumstances, when one human looks up to the other, they crank their neck to do so (a sentiment offered by the chorus of the song). From a minor personal trial, the concept for the piece progressed into a dissection of the ways humans alter themselves to appeal to a hierarchy. The same can be said for looking down: inequality disconnects and serves no one.
The single “Hear My Mind” is a dance anthem for the alone time lover. It offers celebration in the ease of being alone. The single “Steady” challenges the pace of life, attempting a balance between hustle and patience through economy of motion and connection with others. The final single, “Little Toes,” with a music video by Lance Williams, was a collaboration between Annabelle and CAPYAC. It drew inspiration from a poem by Eric of CAPYAC that reflects on a fragile situation; his friend had given birth to a premature baby months prior. Just before our session, Eric got the call that the family and baby were able to finally go home. To the relief of all of us, we conjured a song about the situation. The song reflects on how fragile and valuable we are. While filming the music video, it was serendipitously revealed that the baby’s name is Annabelle.
