The song “Steady” by Annabelle Maginnis and Smile High Club featuring def.sound is a tune about moving fast. Annabelle speeds through lanes carelessly as they reveal how toxic a rushed life can be. In def’s verse, they expand on some of the beauties of connection in stark juxtaposition to the hurried impatience of Annabelle’s first verse. Finally the two voices converge in the chorus in which the pair displays that the slowness of another person can offer clarity and peace. After the bridge, the chorus takes on a new meaning. While the words, “Stay back if you’re not ready to go fast, I’m moving steady” may originally be interpreted as a hustler’s testimony, within the context of connectivity, the intention shifts; it’s possible to grow faster with others than alone.
“Steady” features percussion and drum production by Teddy Roxpin, guitar by Max Newman of The Main Squeeze, bass by Will Robinson and mixing by Delwin Campbell of CAPYAC.
